Microneedling vs Nanoneedling Which Treatment is Right for Your Skin?

We’re past the winter solstice, but these winter days are dragging on for me. It’s cold and dark when I get up in the morning – and I feel like it shows on my skin! While summer light gives that natural glow and I feel the radiance and joy shining out of my skin, I feel like winter does just the opposite. I feel the bleak cloudy days dulling my shine, and the moisture seeping out of my pores and leaving dry, dehydrated and dull skin behind.
While I’m sharing a few grim facts, that cold temperatures, winter winds and exposure to indoor heating and less humidity can compromise your skin barrier – its not all bad news in this winter skin newsletter!

I want to share about two shine and glow delivering treatments that can turn your winter skin around – and start the summer glow prep right now. My go to favourites are nanoneedling and microneedling. Both use similar mechanisms of action to deliver exfoliation of dead skin cells that build up over the winter months, as well as triggering a natural boost of collagen when the healing response is triggered in the skin. The big difference? It’s depth – depth of penetration makes all the difference between these two treatments. Let’s talk microneedling vs nanoneedling and where in the skin both these powerhouse technologies treat and when you should book them in.
Microneedling creates micro-injuries in the skin with fine needles, targeting the dermis. This layer of skin contains collagen and elastin fibres, the building blocks of your skin. By creating micro-channels we’re able to trigger your body’s wound healing cascade, producing growth factors and fibroblasts that will increase collagen production and organise elastin fibres. The benefit of creating micro-channels is that it largely protects surrounding tissues and the epidermis, the outer layer of skin, decreasing the downtime needed to see effects. It also increases blood supply to the treated area, further supporting the healing process and increases nutrient supply to your face. This is also a great opportunity to deliver targeted serums for hydration, pigmentation or signs of aging deeper into the skin as transdermal drug delivery is increased by the micro-channels, amplifying effectiveness.
What can microneedling treat?
- Acne scars
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Enlarged pores
- Skin laxity
- Stretch marks
- Hair growth stimulation
Put simply? We’re tricking your body into producing more collagen, which is pretty cool since as we age, it’s already starting to decline. The results? Your skin is more vibrant and bright, and we’ve amplified your skin care at home and in the clinic by delivering it deep into your skin.
Next up, Nanoneedling. Like you might expect, we’re still using fine needles during this procedure – the difference is we’re targeting the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. The aim of this non-invasive treatment is to resurface the outer layer of skin, causing a natural boost to skin healing, and to deeply infuse potent active serums, immediately increasing hydration and skin glow. Without the downtime and recovery needed for microneedling, nanoneedling is a treatment that amplifies your skin care and has visible and immediate effects revealing radiant skin.
How to choose the right treatment for you? Both microneedling and nanoneedling have earnt their place in your treatment plan with their skin boosting qualities. The considerations to make are timing and recovery time. As a time poor international flight attendant, sometimes all I have time for is a nanoneedling treatment. With two days on the ground between trips, there’s not enough time to allow my skin to heal and rejuvenate before I put makeup on and dehydrate it in the recycled cabin air. Microneedling delivers a powerhouse of benefits but does need 3 – 4 days on the ground to allow the micro-injuries to cover and to ensure your skin is no longer sensitive. This is where nanoneedling can offer a solution for those that are time poor – it’s even a Friday afternoon alternative when you get the call that drinks are going ahead when you thought your hottest winter plans were with your hot water bottle at home!
Every skin is different, and this newsletter is designed to educate and inspire. Assessment of your skin and goals, as always, is vitally important, and all treatment recommendations will be tailored for your skin following consultation.
Thanks for reading! I hope you found this helpful, fun and educational. If you know someone who’d benefit from this month’s edition, feel free to forward it their way – good skin advice is always worth sharing.
See you next time!
